The Surakimu Sri Lanka Organisation (SSLO) is to hold a discussion with President Ranil Wickremesinghe in regard to providing concessions for electricity bills of religious institutions, following the recently announced electricity tariff hike.
SSLO President, Ven. Pahiyangala Ananda Sagara Thera said they have requested discussions with relevant authorities on the matter and they received an invitation from the President for discussions as well.
They will brief the President on the difficulties faced by religious institutions in the aftermath of the recent electricity tariff hike, the Thera said.
He said following the recent electricity tariff hike, electricity bills of religious institutions have increased by 555 per cent.
Thus, the Thera added that they decided to bring the matter to the attention of the officials concerned and as part of that process they had initially sought an audience with the President.
Ven. Ananda Sagara Thera said at present there are 48,682 religious institutions which utilise electricity and observed that electricity consumption of those places is only 0.7 per cent of total consumption of the country.
