Act now to prevent another outbreak – Dr. Perera

With two patients being treated for Covid-19 complications and the number of Covid patients below 12 years on the rise at the Lady Ridgeway Hospital (LRH), Consultant Paediatrician, Dr. Channa Perera warned that the situation could develop into yet another viral wave if measures were not taken to control and prevent the disease.

He said the LRH had to allocate a certain section of the ICU for patients with Covid-19 with the influx of young patients with the virus being admitted.

Dr. Perera, when contacted yesterday (18), said the public should be forewarned to take immediate control and prevention measures by adapting at least the wearing of masks at this juncture.

The present rise of the BA.5 sub variant could be prevented from reaching epic heights if such measures were taken. He said children being amongst the most vulnerable group were at a double disadvantage owing to the Covid virus and the economic crisis.

A majority of the people don’t wear the face mask particularly during this period when the country is going through an economic crisis, fuel issues, and large sections of the public have no option but to use public transport.

“There may be patients who are unaware that they had contracted the viral infection in public. But if everyone wears the face mask, then people without the infection are protected against it, while those with the coronavirus would not spread the disease,” he said.

Fielding questions, the Consultant Paediatrician, who was the former Secretary of the Sri Lanka College of Paediatricians (SLCP) said schools should remain open while taking precautionary measures.

A total of 1,248 Covid-19 cases were recorded from 8 to 14 August.
