The price of a cement brick has gone up owing to the recent increase in the electricity tariff and price of raw materials.

The head of the Sri Lanka National Constructors’ Society Susantha Liyanarachchi said that the price of a cement brick which had stood at Rs 28 has now spiked to Rs 40 due to fuel prices having gone up and the costs involved with raw materials.

He warned that the prices of cement blocks will go up further due to the sudden increase in the electricity tariff by the Government.

He also warned that the entire construction industry is facing collapse and that around 5.5 million people who depend on it as a livelihood will see their jobs becoming uncertain in the coming months.
