President agreed to abolish PTA – Wiggy

President Ranil Wickremesinghe agreed to abolish the draconian Prevention of Terrorism Act (PTA), Thamil Makkal Thesiya Kuttani (TMTK) Leader MP C.V. Wigneswaran claimed.

Wigneswaran said the report which is to be submitted before the United Nation Human Rights Council (UNHRC) in Geneva, in September, concerning Sri Lanka, would be highly detrimental to the country.

He expressed hope that before the upcoming UNHRC sessions kick off in Geneva next month the demands he had sought from the President will be implemented for the sake of this country and its people.

The MP stated that Minister of Justice, Prison Affairs and Constitutional Reforms Dr. Wijeyadasa Rajapakshe had assured him the basic programme towards the release of 45 Tamil political prisoners, who have been jailed for minor offences, has already begun.

He added that the Minister has informed him that prior to the release of the prisoners he was awaiting for the report compiled in this regard by former Chief Justice Asoka de Silva.

Wigneswaran noted that prior to the secret ballot held in Parliament last July to elect the new President, Wickremesinghe had consented to his demands for the release of Tamil political prisoners and to halt the forced takeover of lands in the North-East.
