Two arrested for stealing MP Athukorala’s gold rings


Two individuals who had stolen three gold rings worn by former MP Amarakeerthi Athukorala when he was assaulted and killed have been arrested.

The suspects are accused of stealing the rings when the MP and a police sergeant attached to his security detail were murdered in Nittambuwa on 9 May.

One of the suspects, who had stolen two rings from the parliamentarian, was arrested in Ranpokunagama, Nittambuwa on 8 August.

He is also accused of stealing the mobile phone of Meegahakiula Pradeshiya Sabha Chairman. Police had found the stolen item in the possession of the suspect.

Meanwhile, the second suspect who stole the other gold ring was arrested in Nittambuwa, Gampaha early last morning (9).

They have been remanded until 22 August after being produced before Attanagalla Magistrate’s Court yesterday.

The duo, aged 30 and 38 years, have been identified as residents of Nittambuwa and Ranpokunugama.

According to the Police, out of the 38 suspects arrested, 37 are currently in remand custody over the killing of MP Amarakeerthi Athukorala.
