Refuelling tractors under the QR system is impractical and farmers continue to face several challenges due to fuel shortages, farmers’ associations say.
They say that machines need over 20.27 million litres of disel for the paddy harvest for the Yala Season which amounts to 3,020 bowsers.
The Minister of Agriculture Mahinda Amaraweera, met with farmers’ associations representing all districts and they proposed a system where farmers can get diesel directly from fuel stations.
Amaraweera agreed to release fuel according to the method proposed by the farmers’ representatives and asked them to present the system at the next meeting to draw the attention of the Ministers’ Council to support their request.
Amaraweera said, there may be a huge wastage of the harvest if the farming activities are delayed by even a day. He noted that the request will be implemented in consultation with the top officials of the Ceylon Petroleum Corporation (CPC).
