Issuing a special congratulatory message to the President on 3 August, the United Nations Secretary General (UNSG), Antonio Guterres, has said that the leadership of President Ranil Wickramasinghe will be critical in bringing stability and ensuring an environment conducive to ushering Sri Lanka out of the current challenges the country is facing.
He acknowledged the President’s commitment to forge a consensus among all political parties in developing a national strategy to address these challenges. The Secretary General also pointed out the importance of encouraging dialogue among all stakeholders, including consultation with the public, as well as respect for the rule of law and fundamental human rights principles.
Secretary General Guterres welcomed Sri Lanka’s efforts towards women’s political participation and encouraged the President’s leadership to accelerate progress. The UN stressed that it is ready to support the Government and people of Sri Lanka to address their immediate and long-term needs and added that it is looking forward to continue UN’s cooperation to advance peace building, sustainable development and human rights for the benefit of all Sri Lankans.
