A brave second half effort by Royal took them over the line to beat a gutsy Wesley outfit 21 points (3T 3C) to 16 (1T 1C 3P) in their Dialog Schools League Under-20 encounter at the Longden Place last weekend.
At the short breather it was the double Blues who led 9/7.
Wesley dominated play in the first half through some gutsy moves, but the Royal defense was rock solid and never allowed their opponents to cross the line.
Wesley fly half put over three penalties to give them a 9/0 lead. For Royal, hooker Danuja Samararatne and full back Nabeel Yehiya had a grand game. Danuja touched down for Royal’s first try which was goaled by Yehiya in the first half.
After the turn around, through a maul Danuja Samararatne scored his second try for Royal in the 45th minute and Yehiya added the extras to take a 14/9 lead. Royal dominated the second half and once again the duo of Danuja/Yehiya were instrumental in Royal increasing their lead to 21-9. Danuja went over for their third try and Yehiya added the extras.
Wesley never gave up and kept up their fighting spirit attacking in injury time and scored through Shaveen Jayawardena. He added the extras himself but ended on the losing side.
