Health Ministry prepared to identify and manage monkeypox


The Ministry of Health says appropriate measures have to be taken to strengthen surveillance activities to identify, notify and manage any suspected cases of monkeypox virus promptly to prevent onward spread in the country.

Accordingly, once a suspected case is identified, the ministry has instructed all healthcare institutions to immediately report to the Chief Epidemiologist, Epidemiology Unit through 011-2695112, 011-2681548 or contact the Epidemiology Unit for any clarifications and/or assistance.

Further measures are as below:

On 23 July, the escalating global monkeypox outbreak was declared a Public Health Emergency
of International Concern (PHEIC) by the World Health Organisation (WHO).

The case definitions of suspected, probable, and confirmed cases of monkeypox are attached to
aid in the identification of cases (Annexure 1).
