Ayman al-Zawahiri, the present leader of Al Qaeda and a mastermind of the 9/11 attack on the Twin Towers in New York City and two other US targets, was struck dead when he was on his balcony in Kabul on 31 July. His family and other inmates of the house were safe. The missile attack on a terrorist sought after and trailed for 20 long years and finally tracked down and killed was of excellent timing and spot on. The attack must surely have been from a spot in Kabul itself. The US had promised a reward of USD 25 million. This proves that the US never gave up the search for one of the chief plotters against it, even though governments and presidents changed in the interim.
President Biden announced he had granted permission on 25 July to exterminate the deadly terrorist. He said on 31 July, announcing the killing, that he hoped it would bring ‘closure’ to families of the 3,000 people killed by Al Qaeda. “Justice has been delivered and this terrorist leader is no more. The US continues to demonstrate our resolve and our capacity to defend American people against those who seek to do us harm. Tonight we made it clear. No matter how long it takes. No matter where you try to hide. We will find you.”
Since terrorism is taking hold over here too and may lead to a state of anarchy, it is beneficial to be warned by remembering past acts of terrorism, one of the worst in all history being the attack on the US by the Muslim terrorist group Al Qaeda, then led by Osama bin Laden. The convoluted brains in his group including Ayman al-Zawahiri cooked up the ingenious but utterly dastardly act of hijacking commercial flights and ramming the planes into significant buildings in the US. Four planes were hijacked by 19 terrorists from Boston and other American airports coordinately and flown on the morning of 1 September 2001.
The first two rammed into the North and South Twin Towers of the World Trade Center in Lower Manhattan in New York, which were part of the famous skyline New Yorkers were so proud of. The towers collapsed along with people who failed to escape and of course the terrorists and travellers on the planes. The third plane targeted the Pentagon but damaged only part of it. The fourth supposedly targeting the White House in Washington DC, was counter hijacked by passengers who got wind of the two earlier attacks that had just been completed. They bravely tackled the terrorists in the cabin. The plane nosedived in a field, killing all on board.
Al Qaeda claimed being the originators and executors of the attacks. The US immediately started keeping tabs on Osama bin Laden, then leader of Al Qaeda.
This organisation is a multinational militant Sunni Islamic extremist network founded in 1988 by Osama bin Laden, Abdulla Azzam and other Arab volunteers during the Soviet-Afghan war. It was declared a terrorist outfit after early attacks by most countries and organisations such as NATO. Members believe man-made laws must be substituted for by Islamic Religious Law.
Its leader Osama bin Laden moved from one hiding place to another after 9/11, knowing full well he was targetted by the US. Finally he settled down in a far off place in Pakistan, living like an ordinary citizen of the land. On 2 May 2011, a group of specially trained US Special Force members known as Navy SEALs, were transported by helicopter to the vicinity of the house. Watched by President Barak Obama, Foreign Secretary Hillary Clinton and Chiefs of the Armed Forces in the White House, a few SEALs crept into the house and then to the room Obama was in and shot him point blank range. His body was taken out of Pakistan by US Forces for DNA identification and soon after given a burial at sea.
There recently was talk of it being unethical or a transgression of human rights or whatever to kill an unarmed person. I treat that as hilarious, not merely absurd. The shooting of Osama was completely justified.
