Human Rights Defenders must be supported, not punished – UN Special Rapporteur

United Nations Special Rapporteur on Human Rights Defenders Mary Lawlor has questioned the recent arrest of Joseph Stalin.

Stalin, General Secretary of the Sri Lanka Teachers’ Union, was arrested yesterday (03) on charges of violating a court order during an anti-government protest.

“I’m hearing disturbing reports from Sri Lanka that prominent Human Rights Defender, Joseph Stalin, was arrested at 6 pm this evening,” Lawlor said in a Twitter message yesterday.

Emphasising that the work of human rights defenders such as Stalin has been more important than ever in recent weeks, she urged that such persons must be supported, not punished.
