Chief Incumbent of Rajopawanaramaya in Getambe, Ven. Keppitiyagoda Siriwimala Thera urged President Ranil Wickremesinghe to provide former President Gotabaya Rajapaksa with adequate security so that he could return to Sri Lanka and live peacefully.
He also urged Wickremesinghe to provide him with all of the facilities provided to former Presidents, as well as to intervene privately in inviting Rajapaksa to Sri Lanka.
In a letter to Wickremesinghe, Ven. SiriwimalaThera said, Sri Lanka is experiencing the worst economic crisis in its history and Rajapaksa, who received the majority of the people’s mandate, has now left the country. He claimed Rajapaksa even revoked his dual citizenship in order to devote his life to serving Sri Lanka.
Ven. Siriwimala Thera, on the other hand, pointed out that one person must pay the price for the 74 years of mistakes.
“Rajapaksa was forced to leave the country and he did not even receive the benefits that ordinary Sri Lankans are entitled to. He is well-liked. We must not forget that he is a person entitled to more benefits. Rajapaksa represents the Sinhala-Buddhist majority mandate and he is the person who saved the people and the country from a potentially lethal pandemic,” he said.
In the letter, Ven. Siriwimala Thera said that when the pandemic hit the country, the Government was forced to provide relief to the people and all production was halted.
“However, as a Buddhist Leader, Rajapaksa did not use his executive powers against anyone and he thought wisely and patiently before resigning. As the Maha Sangha, we see it as a great move by a great Buddhist Leader,” he said.
