Navy, Police arrest 47, seize three vans

The Navy and Wennappuwa Police conducted a special operation in Wennappuwa town and arrested 47 persons on 31 July who were attempting to illegally migrate to a foreign country via the sea route.

The coordinated operation was mounted by the Western Naval Command and Wennappuwa Police, on information received by the Sri Lanka Navy. The group was nabbed after a search operation was carried out on three suspicious vans in Wennappuwa on 31 July night. Among those apprehended were 37 males and six females over 18 years and four below the age of 18. Three vans used for the purpose were also seized.

The apprehended persons were identified as residents of Jaffna, Vavuniya, Trincomalee, Kalmunai, Batticaloa, Puttalam, Chilaw, Marawila, Mahawewa, Mundalama and Wellawatta. They were handed over to Wennappuwa Police for onward investigation.

It is observed that human smugglers organise this type of racket to make a fast buck. Against such a backdrop, the Navy urges the public to refrain from risking their lives by engaging in perilous sea voyages and end up being victims of the law.
