The Department of Registration Of Persons announced yesterday (1) that they will commence the addition of Sri Lankan Identification Number to the birth certificate, issued by the Registrar General’s Department, from this month.
The pilot project will be implemented in Gampaha, Dehiwala, Hanguranketha, Kurunegala, Ratnapura and Thamankaduwa Divisional Secretariats.
This decision was taken in accordance with the Cabinet decision taken on 14 December 2021.
According to the Department of Registration of Persons; the information will be shared through an online mechanism between the two Departments.
All citizens who obtain the birth certificates under this mechanism will be benefited to get this identification number with the same number after the age of 15 years. With this system only one number will be used in the verification of the identity of the citizens in every instance where it is needed.
The department said that it will be very easy for both public and private institutions to store all the necessary details regarding education, financial, health.
