120,000 Sathosa vouchers for underprivileged

Colombo Mayor Rosy Senanayake said the Colombo Municipal Council (CMC) has begun a programme to provide relief to people within the CMC limits who have been affected by the economic crisis.

According to the Colombo Mayor, 120,000 Sathosa vouchers each amounting to Rs 3,500 will be distributed to the underprivileged within the CMC limits.

Colombo Mayor Senanayake added that vouchers were recently distributed to a group of low-income earning families in the Kochchikade area at a simple ceremony held at the Kochchikade V. H. Premadasa Community Centre.

Mayor Senanayake said nearly 14,000 low-income families as well as those who had been working on a daily wage basis had lost their sources of income and survival had become a  struggle and efforts were taken to distribute vouchers among them.

The Colombo Mayor said the vouchers could be used to purchase dry rations worth
Rs. 3,500 from Sathosa outlets. “The CMC has made every effort to alleviate the hunger of the underprivileged and 119 CMC members have joined hands with me in this effort. There are nearly 700,000 within the CMC limits. Nearly 60 per cent or above are low income families”, Senanayake said.
