Oluvil Fisheries Harbour renamed and reopened

Minister of Fisheries Douglas Devananda renamed the Oluvil Fisheries Harbour in the Ampara District as the ‘M.H.M. Ashraff Memorial Fisheries Harbour’.

“The harbour, which is a brainchild of late Minister M.H.M. Ashraff, was not functioning for various reasons and now that the Ministry of Fisheries has taken over the harbour, repairs were effected and necessary construction were carried out with the change of new administration to maximise benefit to local fishermen,” Minister said after the ceremonial opening of the harbour.

Devanenda added that he is delighted to reopen the harbour, paving the way for a brighter future for the area’s fishing community which had previously faced a number of difficulties. He stated that all actions would be taken to solve their urgent problems and that their grievances would be considered favourably to expand their fisheries activities.

Akkaraipattu Mayor Athaullah Ahamed Zackie, Addalaichennai Divisional Secretary M.A. Safeer, Asst. Director of Fisheries Department N. Sri Ranjan, Deputy Director of Disaster Management Centre of Ampara   M.A.C. Riyas and several other Ministry Higher Officials were also present.
