Colombo Masters beat the touring Veterans Cricket team of Victoria by 9 wickets in a 40 overs Masters Cricket encounter played at the Dombagoda Sports Complex ground Horana recently.
The touring team taking first lease of the wicket scored 201/7, with P.O’Meara and B. Wheeler striking splendid knocks of 30* and 27* respectively. Useful contributions from F. De Bond (25), M. Aldred (18) and G. Wheeler (13) got them to a respectable total. L. de Silva was the most successful bowler claiming 3 wickets, while Nalin Jayasuriya got 2 and M. Fernando 1.
President of Colombo Masters Mahes de Zoysa (in his mid-60s and a fine wicket keeper/batter) advised his batters to retire when they reached double figures to give the other batters a chance. Accordingly, C. de Silva (36), M. Fernando (50), Pujitha Gunawardena (17) and M. Nanayakkara (11) took the decision to retire. Middle order batters Mahes de Zoysa 36* together with Riyadh Fowzie 20* saw Colombo Masters reach the target in the 31st over. The tourists were able to capture only one wicket, which fell at 16 runs.
