Two Senior Advisers to President appointed

Prof. Sunanda Maddumabandara and Kshenuka Senewiratne have been appointed as Senior Advisers to President Ranil Wickremesinghe.

The appointments were made by Secretary to the President Saman Ekanayake, on Wickremesinghe’s instructions.

Prof. Maddumabandara and Senewiratne assumed duties as Senior Adviser to the President – Media and Senior Adviser to the President – International Media.

Prof. Maddumabandara is a Professor in the Department of Economics at the University of Kelaniya as well as the Director General of the Economic Development Ministry. He received his education at Mailapitiya Maha Vidyalaya and entered the University of Kelaniya from Thalathuoya Hewahata Central College, Kandy.

He graduated from the University of Kelaniya with a Special Degree in Economics. He completed his postgraduate studies at the Shiga Nayoga University and Osaka Foreign Language University in Japan. He was a former Head of the Department of Economics and held the post of Dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences at the University of Kelaniya.

Senewiratne served as the Ambassador of Sri Lanka to Thailand from 2015 to 2019. She was appointed Secretary of the Ministry of External Affairs in January 2014, subsequent to having served as Additional Secretary of the Ministry from July 2011, Ambassador and Permanent Representative of Sri Lanka to the United Nations in Geneva from 2008 to 2010, and also as High Commissioner of Sri Lanka to the UK, with concurrent accreditation to Ireland from 2005 to 2008. 

She also served as the Deputy High Commissioner in the UK from 2002-2004, Deputy Chief of Mission of the Sri Lanka Embassy to Belgium and the European Union in Brussels from 1996 to 1999, and First Secretary in the Permanent Mission to the UN in New York from 1988 to 1990. Senewiratne was a member of the Sri Lanka delegation to the UN General Assembly sessions, UN Human Rights Council sessions, Non-Aligned Summit, and Commonwealth Heads of Government meetings on a number of occasions.
