Student leader remanded


Anthony Weranga Pushpika, the student leader who was arrested on Wednesday (27), on allegations of several offences including damaging Government property and engaging in protests in violation of Court Orders, was remanded until 9 August.

He was taken into custody on Wednesday (27) in front of the Fort Railway Station.

The Police later announced that he was arrested by Colombo Central Division Criminal Investigation Bureau.

According to the Police, the suspect has been arrested in relation to the investigations into the allegations of holding protests in violation of Court orders, being a member of an unruly crowd, using criminal coercion on Police officers and damaging Government property on 19 May and 9 June in Fort and on 10 June in front of the Ministry of Education.

The suspect was taken to Colombo South Crime Division and later handed over to Fort Police for further investigation.
