More Covid positive cases were found in the Sri Lanka contingent as four athletes and a coach were sidelined by Birmingham Commonwealth Games health authorities as they have tested positive for Covid-19.

Among them are two gymnasts – and their coach. The other two players on the down list are – a basketball player and a women’s rugby player. The Lankan contingent authorities are concerned about the pending situation and are keeping a very close tab on the situation.

Five other athletes were sidelined due to failing the Covid-19 Test in Sri Lanka. They are in quarantine seeking improvement in their status. Among them are two rugby players, a badminton player, a squash player and a gymnast.

Sri Lanka will come out today to compete in the Commonwealth Games 2022 when the men’s and women’s rugby teams kick off their tournament at Coventry City football stadium in Birmingham.

Despite being without two key players – Kavindu Perera and Adeesha Weerathunga – who were ruled out from the team before departure due to being Covid positive, the men’s team led by Srinath Sooriyabandara is in a tough group. They will face mighty Olympic silver medalist New Zealand in the opener, followed by England in the second game, before taking on Samoa in the last group match on Saturday (30th). Replacements for Kavindu and Adeesha, Iroshan Silva and Ramesh Fernando, have joined the team.

While this is their first appearance at the Commonwealth Games, the women’s team will take on England in the opening game, followed by Olympic Gold medalist New Zealand in the second game. In their last game they will take on Canada on Saturday.

Badminton mixed event also commences today, with Sri Lanka playing against Australia. SL is in group ‘A’ alongside India, Pakistan and Australia.
