The implementation of Emergency Regulations is in contravention of the policies of the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP), Party Chairman Prof. G.L. Peiris said.
He added that the declaration is also against the Fundamental Rights of the public as there are sufficient laws to ensure public security, the protection of public order and the maintenance of supplies and services essential to the life of the community.
Prof. Peiris noted that Emergency Regulations were irrelevant and they pave the way for the implementing of ulterior motives that are not beneficial to the public. He added that he thereby voted against the Regulations.
The Emergency Regulations were approved in Parliament on 27 July, with majority of 57 votes. A total of 120 MPs voted in favour of the Emergency Regulations while 63, including Prof. Peiris, Dullas Alahapperuma, Dilan Perera and few others in the same camp voted against the regulations. Alahapperuma, speaking at a Media briefing yesterday (28), said the Government should uphold the constitutional rights of the public, adding that Emergency Regulations will undermine such rights.
