SJB to force Govt to go for a General Election soon

Chief Opposition Whip Lakshman Kiriella yesterday said in Parliament the Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) will commence a programme to force the Government to call for a General Election soon.

Participating in the debate over Emergency Regulations, Kiriella said the ruling party which gained a two-third majority at the General Election in 2020, has now lost that mandate.

“The President, the PM and the Cabinet of that Government resigned. Although, new appointments were made, it is just like old wine in new bottles. Therefore, people should be given the opportunity to elect the new government of their choice,” Kiriella said.

Kiriella, who pointed out that though Sri Lanka wants the support of international community to overcome the crisis situation, said no foreign country would support a government where the heads keep changing.

“Several heads of foreign missions have told us that they will not provide any assistance to Sri Lanka anymore. So, how are you (government) going to get the support of international community? Do you have a solid plan for that? We have been informed that the staff level agreement which was to be signed with IMF has been delayed by a few months. It is not likely that IMF assistance will come until middle of 2023,” Kiriella noted.
