Emergency passed


The Emergency Regulations were approved in Parliament yesterday with a majority of 57 votes. A total of 120 MPs voted in favour of Emergency Regulations while 63 voted against.

The State of Emergency was declared in a proclamation by then Acting President Ranil Wickremesinghe in terms of Article 40(1)(C) of the Constitution in the interests of public security, the protection of public order and the maintenance of supplies and services essential to the life of the community.

SLPP Chairman G.L. Pieris, Dullas Alahapperuma, Dilan Perera and few others in the same camp voted against the regulations, 10 MPs that represent the ‘Forum of Independent Parliamentarians’ including Wimal Weerawansa and Tissa Vitarana voted in favour of it.
