State-sponsored violence reached new heights – Sajith

Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa said all those who waited to see the beginning of a new journey had only State-sponsored violence to witness.

He expressed these views, yesterday (25) at the special meeting of the National Reforms Movement of the Samagi Jana Balawegaya. The purpose of the Movement is to obtain positive ideas and suggestions for creating a progressive country. A group of political party leaders, Parliamentarians, and professionals attended the meeting.

Premadasa said democracy cannot be tarnished, and brutality cannot be condoned adding that rulers must set an example of unity and justice.

“Today, instead of democracy, there is State sponsored violence. The first attack on the democratic struggle of the people of this country was launched on 9 May 2022 through State sponsored violence and the result was that the Prime Minister had to go home, and after that it extended to the expulsion of the President from the country,” he added.

Premadasa also said that a President who became the ruler of the country with a majority of 6.9 million can do nothing and behave arbitrarily in a situation where a public struggle has forced him to flee out of the country.

He said that an appointed dictatorship should not be allowed to act like a democracy in this country, but the rulers should set an example of unity and fairness.
