Overseas travel ban on Stalin, five others


Colombo Fort Magistrate Thilina Gamage, yesterday (25) impounded the passports of Ceylon Teachers’ Union (CTU) General Secretary Joseph Stalin and five others, who have been charged with causing damage to public property, whilst staging a protest opposite the Police Department.

The others, whose passports were impounded by the Court, were Convener of the Inter University Students’ Federation (IUSF) Wasantha Mudalige, former Convener of the IUSF Lahiru Weerasekera, Rev. Fr. Jeevantha Peiris, Eranga Gunasekara and Rangana Lakmal Devapriya.

Magistrate Gamage gave this order having considered submissions made to Court by the Fort Police.

Fort Police had begun a probe into the said incident, which had taken place opposite the Police Headquarters on 9 July.

Previously, Fort Police had arrested nine suspects in this connection and after they were produced in Court they were remanded, but were subsequently released on bail.

Among those suspects, were actors Jehan Appuhamy, Jagath Manuwarna and YouTuber Rathindu Senaratne aka Ratta.
