SLPP still commands majority – Imran

SJB MP M. Imran yesterday (24) said even though former President Gotabaya Rajapaksa has been ousted, his party still has a majority in Parliament.

He was speaking about the present situation in the country and what prompted Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa to withdraw his nomination at the last minute.

“It was a difficult decision reached after extensive consultation with various factions. Everyone must make sacrifices to save the country from this tragic situation and rebuild the collapsed economy, while ensuring the restoration of day-to-day life for those affected by the present economic crisis,” he said.

He said this is not the time to gain political mileage. “Premadasa has set a historically important precedent to go for an election within a short period, establishing political stability, and setting up an All-Party Government.”

“Even though President Gotabaya was chased off, the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) still has a majority in Parliament. It is clear that even though the SJBhas over 45 seats in Parliament, it cannot create political stability in the country. The SJB is ready to find short-term as well as long-term solutions to the economic crisis,” Imran added.
