Ambulance driver charged with DUI


An ambulance driver attached to a State hospital pleaded guilty to six charges after being produced before the Hatton Magistrate, including injuring three persons.

On 22 July, an ambulance from the Divisional Hospital Bogawantalawa was plying from Nawalapitiya to Bogawantalawa when it collided with a three-wheeler on the Hatton-Dikoya Road, injuring three persons.

Residents claimed that the ambulance driver was intoxicated at the time, and the Police later confirmed this with a medical examination. He was charged with failing to prevent an accident, causing an accident, and causing personal injury. He was also charged with property damage and government property damage.

In this accident, a 60-year-old and a 17-year-old travelling in the three-wheeler were injured. One person sustained abdominal injuries and the 17-year-old suffered an arm fracture. Area residents rushed the victims to hospital and handed over the ambulance driver to Police.
