The Human Rights Commission of Sri Lanka (HRCSL) has called for the immediate revocation of the state of emergency currently in effect.

Issuing a statement, the HRCSL noted that the inappropriate declaration of emergency is contrary to the rule of law.

They further noted that any attempt to suppress the fundamental rights of the people by the continuous declaration of emergency violates the Constitution.

A state of emergency was declared islandwide on 18 July, for reasons which are yet unclear, and remains in effect as of today (22).
