People’s Council need of the hour – FSP

“Since the true expectations of the people is not represented in this parliament it can no longer be accepted as a public representative body”, Educational Secretary of Front-Line Socialist party (FSP) Pubudu Jayagoda said.

He said Parliament got the opportunity to prove that they were with the people when the vote to elect a new President was held. However, the MPs showed that people›s opinion did not matter and that Parliament does not represent them, he said.

Speaking to the media on Wednesday(20) Jayagoda claimed that President Ranil Wickremesinghe was Prime Minister six times. He said it is questionable to believe that someone who did not represent the people back then, would do it this time around.

He alleged the President of bribing MPs with money for the votes and the latter promised eight MPs the Premiership and 60 others of Cabinet positions.

“Gotabaya Rajapaksa who got 6.9 million of votes and, had a two-thirds majority was ousted by the people of our country. If Ranil Wickremesinghe who became an MP, Prime Minister and now President without the people’s vote is trying to repress the ‘Aragalaya’, it is a futile attempt”, he emphasised.

He also commented on the proposal made by different parties to hold an Election as soon as possible

“Even the current election system is a system that will use the money, media, civil and government power. So the end result would not differ from the current situation. Therefore, the election system must change, or new rules and regulations must be added. Otherwise it will be a failed attempt”, he said.

He said the only solution for all the issues is giving more power to the people. Jayagoda said a People’s Council that represents all industries that are currently protesting must be formed. He requested the people to unite as one and help to make the Council from within the ‘Aragalaya’. He also said Ranil Wickremesinghe should not be accepted as the President of the country.
