Dhammika Perera to quit Parliament?

SLPP MP Dhammika Perera is to step down as a National List MP, SLPP internal sources said, adding however that the letter of resignation is yet to be handed over.

The Election Commission on 10 June gazetted Perera’s name as an SLPP National List MP, to fill the Parliamentary seat made vacant by the resignation of Basil Rajapaksa.

Perera’s name was submitted to the Election Commission earlier, on 10 June, by SLPP General Secretary Sagara Kariyawasam. Perera also resigned from the director boards of several companies where he held shares and was given SLPP membership.

The Fundamental Rights (FR) petitions filed challenging the appointment of Perera to the SLPP National List Parliamentary seat, were also dismissed by the Supreme Court on 21 June and he was sworn in as an MP on 22 June before Speaker Mahinda Yapa Abeywardena.

He was later appointed as the Minister of Investment Promotion and he resigned from the same on 10 July.
