President-elect reform agenda reliant on other political parties – CPA

The decisions that will be made by the newly appointed President Ranil Wickremesinghe will most likely be influenced as he would be heavily reliant on other political parties to bring about a reform agenda, senior researcher of the Centre for Policy Alternatives (CPA) Bhavani Fonseka said.

She added as the UNP only secured one Parliamentary seat, Wickremesinghe would require the support of other Political parties for legislative reforms including the Party of the outgoing President, Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP).

While stating that the appointment of Wickremesinghe was against the demand of protesters, Fonseka noted that protesters have pledged to continue protests demanding for his resignation.

Fonseka added the manner in which Wickremesinghe, who was appointed with a resounding number of Parliamentary votes and is due to be sworn in as President today (21), will carry out functions as President amidst protests is to be seen in the days to come.
