Colombo Fort Magistrate Thilina Gamage yesterday (20) issued an order prohibiting people from assembling around a 50-metre radius of the famed statue of the late Premier, S.W.R.D. Bandaranaike, at Galle Face.

The order was issued after considering a request made by the Colombo Fort Police via a B Report.

The Police made submissions to this effect citing reports of imminent damage to the statue, by those who are engaged in protests, in the event of Ranil Wickremesinghe being elected as the new President during the secret vote held in Parliament yesterday (20).

Fort Police added that they had already deployed additional security in and around the statue, at Galle Face.

The Police also informed the Court regarding the historical significance of the statue.

They prayed the Court to issue an order preventing anyone from converging around a 50-metre radius of the statue.

Considering this request, Magistrate Gamage issued an order barring anyone from gathering around a 50-metre radius of the iconic statue.
