Between 700,000 and 800,000 cylinders of Litro LP gas have been distributed islandwide in the past few days.
Litro intends to distribute 60,000 cylinders of gas per day to a number of areas outside Colombo. Litro has 42 dealers islandwide.
Litro began distributing gas on 11 July. It distributed 70 per cent of the cylinders in the Colombo District and 30 per cent to bakeries and small businesses within the first two days. To avoid a rush, gas was sold directly to consumers in parks and open spaces.
Further, to discourage illegal transactions, cylinders were distributed to persons who could produce their electricity bill. The bills were stamped to avoid repeat purchases.
Meanwhile, long queues were seen outside LP gas distribution centres countrywide. Litro Chairman, Muditha Peiris said he hopes to eliminate the country’s LP gas queues by 31 July and to maintain adequate stocks until the end of October.
