Navy seizes 30kg cannabis off Kachchativu

Sri Lanka Navy took custody of 30kg of Kerala cannabis floating off the Kachchativu Island on 18 July.

The detection was made during a special operation conducted by the Navy to turn away Indian poaching trawlers from Sri Lankan waters. The gross street value of seized Kerala cannabis is believed to be around Rs. 9 million.

It is suspected that the smugglers might have abandoned the stock of narcotics, being unable to bring them ashore due to the presence of the Navy.

The Fast Attack Craft P 412 of the 04th Fast Attack Flotilla in the Northern Naval Command on 18 July carried out a special operation to turn away Indian poaching vessels from island’s waters.

During the operation the Navy took custody of this stock of Kerala cannabis in nine packages, weighing about 30kg floating near the Kachchativu Island.

The stock of cannabis has been kept in naval custody until it is produced for onward legal proceedings.
