Jayawardene scores century in drawn game

Youth cap Sadeesh Jayawardene, deputy skipper of St. Joseph’s, scored a valuable unbeaten century to ensure the 88th ‘Battle of the Saints’ at P. Sara Oval stadium ended in a draw yesterday.

St. Peter’s who had scored 251 runs for 8 wickets in 60 overs in the first innings, scored 237 runs for 7 wickets in 59.5 overs in their second innings. Abilash Wellalage (61) and Lahiru Dawatage (53) scored half centuries. Wanuja Sahan Kumara (28), Vishen Halambage (22), Danal Hemananda (21*), Shenal Botheju (18) and Niman Umesh (17*) helped to build their inning. Abilash Wellalage and Lahiru Dawatage were involved in 64 runs stand for the 4th wicket. Shevon Daniel claimed 5 wickets for 80 runs.

St. Joseph’s who were bowled out 163 runs in 45.1 overs in the first innings, got a massive target of 321 runs to win. They had scored 163 runs for 5 wickets in 58 overs at close. Right hand opener Sadeesh Jayawardene scored an unbeaten 103 runs in 189 deliveries with 11 boundaries. Hiran Jayasundara (19*), Muditha Lakshan (14) and Dunith Wellalage (10) helped to build their inning. Opener Sadeesh Jayawardene and Hiran Jayasundara were involved in an unbroken 51 runs stand for the 6th wicket.
