Catholic Church condemns Ranil’s comments

Criticising Acting President Ranil Wickremesinghe’s statement that he would get assistance from Scotland Yard to conduct independent investigations into the Easter Sunday terror attacks in 2019, the Catholic Church of Sri Lanka said Wickremesinghe is attempting to hoodwink the victims and those who are seeking justice for the carnage.

Spokesman for the Archdiocese of Colombo, Fr. Cyril Gamini Fernando told the media yesterday (19) that the Catholic Church had little confidence in Wickremesinghe’s pledge.

“He had the capability of calling an investigation and getting international support to conduct an independent investigation earlier. But he did not do so at that time. The Catholic Church has no confidence in such pledges. We view this as an effort by Wickremesinghe to become the President. We see it as an attempt by him to gain presidential power over the blood of the Easter Sunday victims and those still suffering from it,” he said, adding that it is another attempt at deception.

Fr. Fernando said, “Do not try to deceive the people again. People will no longer be fooled by politicians and their deceitful and deceptive efforts.”

The effort and the struggle to gain justice for the Easter Sunday carnage continues till the perpetrators are brought to justice, whoever the President, or whichever the government that comes to power, Fr. Fernando pledged.
