WFP to help upgrade Fishery Law


Fisheries Ministry Secretary Indu Ratnayake yesterday (18) said that support from the World Food Programme (WFP) will be obtained to upgrade the existing fishery law of the country.

Ratnayake said that once the said law is upgraded more services can be provided to fishermen who bring foreign exchange to the country.

She added that there is a need to upgrade the fisheries law to suit the current local and international needs.

The WFP has agreed to provide required technical knowhow for the proposed move, she said. 

Ratnayake added that WFP representatives Ana Olivet Amado and Buba Bojun, who had been to Sri Lanka, met her at Fisheries Ministry in Maligawatta Colombo to discuss the matter and agreed to provide technical support to upgrade the existing fisheries law.
