Schools Food Prog to get 10,000 MT of rice

The Education Ministry has decided to grant 10,000 metric tons of rice, donated by the Government of China, to the Schools Food Programme.

The Schools Food Programme had been initiated by the Education Ministry to provide lunch to students numbering over 1.8 million in this country in 7,925 schools countrywide.

The said programme has been in existence for the past 30 years and the Ministry of Education has taken a decision to grant the aforesaid amount of rice to the Schools Food Programme.

This is due to the current Schools Food Programme not being effective due to the rise in inflation in the country due to the current economic downturn.

The handing over of 1,000 metric tons of rice, by the Chinese Ambassador to Sri Lanka Qi Zhenhong, to the Secretary of the Education Ministry M. N. Ranasinghe, took place at the Ministry premises recently.
