SC decision on Ranil’s appointment today

The Supreme Court will announce its decision on whether or not interim relief will be granted in regard to the Fundamental Rights (FR) petition filed seeking to suspend the appointment of Acting President Ranil Wickremesinghe as a UNP National List MP today (19).

The decision was taken when the Petition filed by General Secretary of Vinivida Foundation, Nagananda Kodituwakku was taken up before Supreme Court Justices Gamini Amarasekara, Shiran Goonaratne and Janak de Silva yesterday (18). The Attorney General and the Attorney appearing on behalf of Wickremesinghe observed, in their preliminary objections, that the appointment as a National List MP was not in contravention to the Constitution.

Kodituwakku however observed that National List nominations should be presented to the Election Commission within a week from the day that the Party Secretaries receives the notice from the Election Commission adding however that the appointment was conducted in contravention to such provision.
