Sri Lanka Podujana Permuna (SLPP) General Secretary Sagara Kariyawasam is yet to respond to the criticism levelled against him over his statement that the SLPP will support Acting President Ranil Wickremesinghe at the upcoming Parliamentary vote for Presidency, and SLPP Media spokesperson said.
While a faction of SLPP MPs have criticised the statement, issued by Kariyawasam, SLPP Chairman, Prof. G.L. Peiris, in a letter, expressed his disapproval over the statement while questioning the basis on which Kariyawasam made such statement.
In the letter, Prof. Peiris questioned how such decision, to support Wickremesinghe, was arrived at, details of any meeting held to arrive at such decision and those present at any such meeting and the relevant provisions of the Party Constitution that was taken into consideration when arriving at such decision. In the relevant statement previously issued by Kariyawasam, he said, although the SLPP took a policy decision to not nominate a SLPP MP as a candidate for Presidency, Dullas Alahapperuma, who was elected to Parliament representing the party, has announced his intention to contest for presidency in contravention to the Party decision.
He said thereby that SLPP has decided to support Wickremesinghe due to his expertise and experience in politics and as he would not be influenced by personal or political interests in his capacity as President.
SLPP MP Premnath C. Dolawaththa, speaking to the Media, observed that Kariyawasam does not have the right to determine who the party should vote for, while stating that the Party decision in this regard is yet to be arrived at.
Meanwhile SLPP MP Anupa Pasqual said Wickremesinghe has been rejected by the public and does not represent SLPP, noting that Alahapperuma is the ideal candidate to represent the party.
