SLMC decision in 48 hours

The Sri Lanka Muslim Congress yesterday (17) said they will take a final decision, within the next 48 hours, on which presidential candidate to support at the 20 July presidential election in Parliament.

SLMC Leader Rauff Hakeem said the ideal nominee must have the capability to rebuild the collapsed economy of this country while ensuring the restoration of normal life of the people who have been impacted by the prevailing economic crisis.

Hakeem added that he has informed his stand to the executive committee of party.

“We will abide by the decisions taken by the alliance which we represent. We have been engaging in the effort to raise a majority within the alliance. It is high time everyone worked together with dedication. We are ready to make maximum sacrifices to resolve the economic crisis the country is faced with today,” Hakeem said.

He made these remarks when he was contacted by Ceylon Today to learn of the stance of SLMC at the forthcoming election to be held in Parliament.

“Good governance must bloom to resolve the burning economic crisis while fulfilling the demands of protesters without the dominance of Rajapaksa family or those who are trying to protect them. We are firm in our stance that such a government must be formed. We are ready to sacrifice our positions, taking the welfare of the country into consideration. The welfare of the country is most important. The matter must be handled with maximum dedication and tolerance. When an election comes we will work on the basis of protocol of our party,” Hakeem said.

“Majority of Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) members do not want to go for a general election soon. They may be willing to run the Government with Ranil Wickremesinghe. We don’t think the burning problems of this country can be resolved under Wickremesinghe’s administration. The protesters have clearly understood Wickremesinghe’s nature, Hakeem added.
