Mullaitivu Police arrest fuel hoarder


Mullaitivu Police, acting on a tip-off, arrested an individual in Mulliyawalai, along with a large stock of diesel and kerosene in his possession.

830 litres of diesel stored in four barrels and 30 litres of kerosene stored in a can were uncovered at a house in Mulliyawalai Fourth Division.

The suspect was released on bail and ordered to appear in Court on 21 July. 

Police said the suspect is a retired government employee.

In related news, Vavuniya Police arrested a man in Pattanichchoor on 16 July for allegedly selling one litre of diesel at Rs 3,000. 

Police also seized nearly 58 litres of diesel from his possession. The suspect is a 31-year-old area resident.

The raid was conducted based on a tip-off from the Army Intelligence Unit.

Meanwhile, a 47-year-old accountant working for the Regional Director of Health Services in Jaffna was killed in a motorcycle-van collision.

The victim is Kalamathy Solamathurai. The motorcycle collided head-on with the van, when the victim was heading to the Ariyalai Fuel Shed.  

The van driver was arrested by Jaffna Police for reckless driving and tested positive for alcohol. Jaffna Police are conducting further investigations.
