Opposition Leader should be next PM – Dayasiri

SLFP General Secretary MP Dayasiri Jayasekara said the next course of action that should be adopted by the MPs at this moment is for the Opposition Leader to be invited to take over the Premiership.

He stated that as it is the accepted norm in Parliamentary democracy that the Opposition Leader is the shadow PM, the incumbent Opposition Leader should be allowed to hold that post for an interim period.

Jayasekara added that those who tend to be elected do not always carry the backing of the masses as had been proved to the country by the fate of the ousted President.

He noted that the SLFP has still not taken a final decision with regard to which candidate they should back during next week’s vote to be held in the House to select the successor to the ousted President.
