The Parliament sitting that was scheduled to be held today (15) was cancelled and instead, the party leaders and Parliament Business Committee members will hold a meeting with regard to the current situation of the country, the Speaker’s Office announced yesterday (14).
Accordingly, Parliament will be convened three days after the Speaker receives President Gotabaya Rajapaksa’s resignation letter.
Parliament was scheduled to be convened following the announcement that the President would send the resignation letter to the Speaker on Wednesday (13), after leaving the country following mass-scale public protest against him on 9 July.
However, the Speaker did not receive the letter by Wednesday (13).
The party leaders had decided to convene Parliament today (15) to announce the resignation of the President. They also decided to call nominations for the post of President on 18 July and to appoint a President on 20 July.
