President made serious breach of public trust – SJB

Commenting on the current political situation Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) noted that the Speaker’s announcement that the President has left the country and Prime Minister has been appointed as the Acting President is an extreme violation of the people’s aspirations and a serious breach of trust.

Issuing a special statement, yesterday (13) SJB General Secretary MP Ranjith Madduma Bandara noted that Gotabaya Rajapaksa’s action to appoint a working President while promising to resign is a direct challenge to the will of the people.

“Rajapaksa has informed the Speaker that he will make a request today. The Speaker informed the country through a press release the other day. The party leaders who met recently decided on a day to convene Parliament to present the proposal for the appointment of a president. It is clear that the current government is trying to suppress the unarmed people’s struggle by imposing emergency and curfew law,” Bandara noted.

He added that they should show that it is impossible to prevent the country from falling victim to this illegal effort.

“It is clear that this is an attempt by the Rajapaksas to assert their power by destabilising the country more and more against attempts to make the country peaceful. Let us emphasise that this effort is not an attempt at democracy, but an attack on dictatorship. At this moment, we request that all the democratic forces put aside all differences and unite against this illegal process. We urge the Government not to implement this arbitrary decision and programme, which is further aggravating public life, political instability and economic crisis,” he added.

Banadara further noted that the SJB will work unconditionally with all democratic forces for the victory of the people’s aspirations against Ranil Wickremesinghe’s act to a fascist-style programme without considering the rights of democracy.
