Opposition Party Leaders urge Ranil to quit

Opposition Party Leaders requested Speaker Mahinda Yapa Abeywardena to inform Acting President Ranil Wickremesinghe to resign prior to the resignation of President Gotabaya Rajapaksa.

The Speaker called for a Party Leaders’ Meeting yesterday (13) at 5.00 p.m. to discuss the current situation and the President’s resignation. However, both Acting President Wickremesinghe and Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa did not participate in the meeting.

During the meeting, all Opposition Party Leaders urged for normalcy to be restored in the country and cited Wickremesinghe’s resignation as the main step.  The Chief of the Defence Staff, the Tri-forces Commanders and the Inspector General of Police (IGP) also participated in the meeting.

Ceylon Today learns that Chief of the Defence Staff General Shavendra Silva has asked the Speaker as to what steps should be taken to protect Parliament during an emergency situation. He has informed the Speaker that the Tri-forces are bound to protect national security and Parliament.  The Speaker has then asked for the opinions of Party Leaders with regard to this question. But the meeting ended without reaching a conclusion.
