JVP Leader condemns PM getting executive powers

JVP Leader Anura Kumara Dissanayake in a special statement said that President Gotabaya Rajapaksa has appointed Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe as the Acting President, instead of announcing his resignation and that the Prime Minister was using newly vested powers to act in a suppressive manner and against democratic principles.

Insisting that the Government has unleashed suppression on people instead of paying heed to their voice and demands and resolve the present crisis peacefully and democratically, he said yesterday (13) that the situation would push the country further into disaster.

“The Prime Minister has ordered a curfew on the Western Province and has declared emergency regulations islandwide. He is also planning to impose Prevention of Terrorism Act (PTA). If they are not trying to resolve these issues peacefully and democratically by listening to the people’s voice and demands, the country will end up in greater turmoil,” he alleged.

He said the country has plunged into disaster during the last few months and that the people’s uprising at this juncture is reasonable.
