St. Joseph’s won both their matches in the first two weeks. The season’s curtain raiser pitted St. Joseph’s against Kingswood, which won easily with a score line of 34-3. They then won a thriller against the Thomians 30-28 to secure the Lady Jayathilake Shield.

The boys from Darley Road have five senior players in their ranks and are aiming to build up a team combination match by match focusing on the league title.

Speaking to Ceylon Today, the head coach of the Josephians, Nilfer Ibrahim, stated that their plan is to take one game at a time and concentrate week by week. “We have a mixture of both experienced and young players. Our fly half Dilhara, No.9 Vihanga, Naveen and Teran, our Captain, who plays as the centre, are our key players. We have four to five players who played in 2020, and them sharing their experience with the younger lot adds a lot of value to us.”

According to the former national Scrum half, the strength of the team is their forwards. “When we had our practice sessions, backs were doing really well and they were our strength, but right now in the middle, the backs are struggling and are yet to strike form. It was a tough challenge for both the players and the coaching staff, but the College was right behind us, supporting us in whatever we needed. We adjusted the issues we had. During the Covid lockdown, we engaged in Zoom training twice a week and carried out our week-by-week schedules.” Nilfer also spoke about their challenges during the Covid period.
