Speaker Mahinda Yapa Abeywardena has confirmed that President Gotabaya Rajapaksa will hand over his letter of resignation today (13).
Speaking to the media, Abeywardena confirmed that Rajapaksa assured him via a phone call that he will resign from Presidency today, as he said he would following the mass protests on Saturday (09).
Accordingly, a new President is due to be elected by the Parliament on 20 July Abeywardena further said, urging all persons to act peacefully henceforth.
“You do not need to have doubt or worry. Therefore, I urge all citizens to act peacefully”, he said to the people, further assuring Rajapaksa’s resignation.
