PM cannot exercise the powers of President – Sajith

Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) Leader Sajith Premadasa has emphasised that Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe cannot exercise the powers of the President.

Taking to Twitter, the Opposition Leader noted that Wickremesinghe would become the acting President only in the event the President appoints him as such, or the office of President is vacant, or if the Chief Justice, in consultation with the Speaker, forms the view that the President is unable to act.

As none of the aforementioned circumstances have taken place, Premadasa noted that Wickremesinghe cannot exercise the powers of the President, and cannot declare a curfew or a state of emergency.

Earlier today (13), the Premier’s Office confirmed that Wickremesinghe had ordered the Police to impose an immediate curfew within the Western Province, and that a state of emergency be declared islandwide.
